It's another case of a band sailing into the mainstream to critical acclaim and massive exposure when they've already made their best album (see also 'X & Y' by Coldplay, who I hate and was a poor offering but it was the album that everyone bought and which made them huge.)
'Underdog' cracks in quite promisingly but repeated listens proves it to be nothing more than a Britpop-style track disguised with some studio trickery and the album doesn't get any better from there.
'Thick as Thieves' is 'People are Strange' by The Doors with a different chorus. 'Where did all the love go?' is a very average song, especially for a second single. Where did all the tunes go...? 'Fire' has that Doorsy verse thing again before a decent but very simple chorus. And there's some boring noodling and never-get-started tracks along the way.
By the time you get to 'Fire' (way down at track 10) I'd be surprised if you don't just feel like you've wasted 40 minutes of your time and want to throw the CD right out of the window. 'Vlad the Impaler' is the most interesting track here. The ordering of the tracks seems odd and nothing flows very well. The production sounds pretty horrible in places and I'm not a fan of the 'deliberately 60's-sounding' feel on a lot of it. Plus, the vocals are often very average and thin, sounding like demo takes in places.
I loved the Chris Karloff showcase that was the debut (I can forgive the Primal Scream plundering.) 'Empire' was a big disappointment but is far better than 'West Ryder..'
No Karloff, no tunes?
I bought the edition with the bonus DVD - it's okay but there are some average performances on there too.
Take away the beardy outlaw/bohemian schtick and and loudmouth posturing and you're left with what is now a very average band. I'd much rather listen to The Music and BRMC, who both do what Kasabian try to do but far, far more successfully.

buy this album on the iStore as you actually get all 13 tracks and the digital booklet for less. only one disc though, doesn't have the commentary disc with it though i don't see that as a problem!

Kasabian's new album is amazing. Having seen them perform songs from the new album at Slane Castle earlier this year (Fire being one the best songs that day) they are really a band that are coming into there own. The DVD is a great watch as well with a great acoustic set and full live footage as well. Pure rock n roll.

The reviews prior to it's release where "mixed"....so I was rather aprehensive in making a purchase, however Amazon had this format with the DVD & also dropped the price to £8.99, so all the early signs were good.
On my 1st listen I was immediatley hooked, as this album is arguably their finest work.I am suprised, almost amazed the hacks & journo's didn't give this LP the thumbs up, as it delivers top notch anthems & Staduim filling tunes. I was very impressed by the production, as it has the essence of a 60's Lp ala Rolling Stones, however sounds progressive & modern at the same time.
For me this LP is a no brainer when it comes to a purchase....EASY choice...BUY IT!!!!
