21 songs from pretty much every era in the career of the "Man in Black". From the sheer exuberance of "Ring of Fire" to the haunting melancholy of "Hurt" via the anarchy of the live recording of "San Quentin" and the high jinks of "I've Been Everywhere", every single track on this excellent collection is wonderful to listen to and makes this a truly essential purchase for anyone who just enjoys popular music of excellent quality.
There's just something about the performances that transcends the material, making a simple lyric like "A Thing Called Love" resonate with all the joy, pain and suffering of a life lived to the absolute fullest. The two live tracks (the other being the hilarious "A Boy Named Sue") show how well Mr Cash engaged with his audiences and the tracks where he is performing with other artistes ("Jackson", "Highwayman") show just how versatile a performer he was.
Also included are a few tracks of covers of modern classics from his later career resurgence (included alongside the aforementioned "Hurt" are "Personal Jesus", U2's "The Wanderer" and "One") which are, quite frankly breathtaking and more than a little poignant.
An absolute joy from start to finish. If you were looking for something that gives you the greatest hits of Johnny Cash, then this must surely be it.

Having watched a very good documentary on Johnny Cash recently, I decided to buy a best of compilation. There were a few to choose from and I finally settled on this collection and I think I made a good choice. There is a varied selection of recordings throughout his career and pretty much everything you would want is here although 'Orange Blossom Special' is missing and I would have left off 'I've Been Everywhere' in place of that.
Most of us are very familiar with his older classics and it is great to hear them again. It is his later recordings that are the most interesting as he covers artists like U2,Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode. 'Personal Jesus' is a curio and the tracks 'The Wanderer' and 'One' are excellent. His cover of 'Hurt' is quite simply fantastic. This is a varied and very well put together history of the songs of an artist who continues to be an influence today.
If you are going to buy one compilation album of Johnny Cash then this is the one I would recommend without question. Five stars for a five star legend.
