Some excellent design and software ideas here, but with severe limitations.

The headphone cable-mounted control works well, but it means you are either stuck with the ipod shuffle's own headphones (which won't stay in my ears unless I glue them) or have to buy an non-apple adaptor. The available adaptors are short, meaning that the controls are near the ipod, not up near the wearer's neck, which rather defeats the point.

The voice-over software is clever. I discovered that it speaks Czech and German quite well when I load Czech or German classical music. However, many of the tracks in my classical collection are lumbered with long titles full of numbers, abbreviations and # signs (e.g. Beethoven: Symphony #7 In A, Op. 92 - 4. Allegro Molto) and it can't really cope with these.

Finally, I encountered a very irritating bug. No matter what I tried some of my playlists would play only in reverse order. I have no idea why.

I bought this for my partner and he loves it!! He uses it when training and thinks it is a great little device.

I am a devotee of Apple having an iMac and Powerbook and also own the previous iPod Shuffle which I am no longer able to use because the battery won't recharge anymore.
I specifically bought this model for use in the gym and have experienced no problems with the buds falling out even whilst using the treadmill for half an hour. Unfortunately I am experiencing problems with increasing the volume on the remote control and it is really annoying when the sound is at the lowest volume and the health suite background noise overpowers what I am trying to appreciate on my iPod. Sometimes I can adjust the sound but mainly I can't and had I known this was going to happen I would not have bought this model but a higher priced one. Apple E-mailed me asking for feedback and I told them I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THEM TO A FRIEND OR ANYONE ELSE.
As incredible as the packaging is and design of the equipment if it's not fit for purpose such delights are negated and Apple has a reputation of sticking two fingers up at purchasers of their products, just witness their recent attitude to the iPhone which has a design fault.
PROSPECTIVE BUYERS BEWARE!

I wanted an MP3 player for use whilst running. I understood from some reviews that one could select a playlist and volume setting using the supplied headphones then swap out the heaphones for a sport pair. THAT IS NOT TRUE. As soon as one removes the ipod headphones this ipod goes into standby mode, rendering non-proprietary headphones useless.

Runners should be aware because it's likely that the supplied heaphones will fall out whilst they're running.

Boughtto use for the gym and for when I travel to meetings. Ideal due to small size, with good playback. Only drawbacks are the the earphone cable is a bit short for the gym, and once updated songs returns to the start of playlist. Apart from that very good product
